How to Maintain a New Construction Home

Check out these tips on how to maintain a brand new custom home!

A new construction home is a blessing; you may have even contributed to the design itself! Moving into a brand new, customized home means not having to worry about repairs, major renovations, and other such issues. On the other hand, new homeowners should be aware of how to maintain a new construction home. Here are five tips you definitely won’t want to overlook!

Listen to Your Home Builder

Your custom home builder will keep you updated on every phase of the construction process, up through the day the last fixture is installed. During this time, you will likely be able to have a walkthrough of the house and understand where everything is and how everything works. Your home builder will show you either during or at the end how to operate the electric panel, the plumbing system, the HVAC system, and the like.

Read the Homeowners’ Manual

Details for these appliances should be in your homeowners’ manual. Read your manual carefully and feel free to ask questions if you don’t understand something. The manual will give you all you need to know to run your home safely.

Mind the Yard

One can also maintain a new construction home by keeping an eye on the property itself. New construction involves grading the land so that water flows off of it toward the nearest drainage system rather than toward the house. Expect the soil to settle over the first seven years, and keep an eye on the land to make sure no drainage issues crop up.

Practice Good Housekeeping

Maintenance starts from the very beginning. Practicing good habits such as circulating the air, keeping the humidity low, cleaning the house often, limiting electricity use, and updating the HVAC air filters are all great ways to keep your home clean, mold-free, and in good working condition. Keep in mind that the number of people in a given house will determine what toll the house might take and how much maintenance is needed.

Understand Your Home Warranty

You should also fully understand your custom home builder’s home warranty. The home warranty covers any mistakes or mishaps that might occur in the first year or more of the home’s existence. Viking Custom Homes’ warranty covers up to 10 years.
