3 Winter Homebuilding Myths

3 Winter Homebuilding Myths

Winter is just as good a time to build a house as any!

We’re quickly on our way to winter weather, which for many in the Maryland area can mean harsh conditions that seem to last forever. All seasonal changes have their quirks and winter is no different. Believe it or not, but there are even myths surrounding winter homebuilding! The truth is, the custom homebuilding industry doesn’t come to a stop once winter comes knocking. We’re still hard at work making your dream homes a reality. That said, we also want to clear up some common myths we see about homebuilding during the winter months.

1. Winter Always Means Delays

It isn’t always the case that winter homebuilding will result in timeline delays. The fact is, many builders are accustomed to working year-round, including during the off-season like winter. There are still contractors who are able to get the work done, no matter what the conditions may be outside. Some builders even embrace the cold weather, as the season tends to be less hectic and can allow them to really focus on a build. Some people hesitate when it comes to having their custom home built during the winter as a result, but there isn’t any significant fear of delays that are any different from the rest of the year.

2. The Weather Compromises Materials

It’s just not the case that winter is going to weaken the materials you use to build your home. Sometimes cold weather can have adverse effects on your materials; concrete, for example, may take longer to set when it’s extremely cold. However, this doesn’t have any lasting impact on the concrete and something like your foundation is going to be just as solid for years to come as if you had built it during the summer.

The fact is that many people in this industry have worked year-round for a long, long time. That means there are ways to overcome any potential obstacles. In this case, additives can be used in concrete to help it set in time, putting those cold-weather woes to the curbside.

3. Winter Building is More Expensive

For most of us, building a custom home is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s also a massive investment. This is why it’s important to think about when you’ll build your house, as it’s just as important as any other factor that could impact your bottom line. Some materials may cost a bit more during the winter. In general, though, winter homebuilding costs aren’t going to be very different from the rest of the year. While some materials may be more expensive, builders experience a slow season during the winter and may be more eager to get the job done within your budget regardless.
