4 Important Considerations for the Kitchen of Your Home

As you’re planning your kitchen for your new home, you need to consider those needs in connection with the various uses of the kitchen space.

The kitchen is one of the most important rooms of a home as so much time is spent there and so much activity goes on there. Perhaps you cook dinner while the kids do homework at the table, or your spouse cooks breakfast while you read the paper by the window. However you use the space, you want the kitchen to match your needs. When you’re planning your kitchen for your new home, you need to consider those needs in connection with the various uses of the kitchen space. Here are four important things to consider as you plan your kitchen design.

Overall Design

Start with the overall design that you’re envisioning. Is it a traditional room or an open concept kitchen? Do you picture an island, a breakfast bar, a corner table with bench seating? Each of these factors needs to be addressed and pulled together into a design that fits your space and budget as much as possible.

Work Space

Make sure that you’re planning enough counter and surface space for the work you need to do. You need to be able to prep food and have a place to place mixing bowls, dirty dishes, and hot pans.  If your kids also need space to do homework that is clear of food, you need to plan for it now.

Smart Storage

An efficient kitchen is one where everything has a home and it is close to where it needs to be used. Plan your new kitchen with enough space to store all of the gadgets and tools you have and position that storage effectively. Smart storage is always on trend, but make sure those cool storage solutions actually fit your lifestyle.

Sink and Dishwasher

Finally, give special consideration to the sink and dishwasher. If you absolutely hate washing dishes, a dishwasher is probably a good investment. On the other hand, if most of your pots, pans, and dishes aren’t dishwasher safe, it might be wiser not to sacrifice the space to an appliance you will hardly use. Traditionally dishwashers are placed near sinks so they can be tied into the existing water supply and drains and to make it more efficient to rinse dishes before loading them in, so keep that in mind while you’re planning.
