Building your new custom home is an exciting, and sometimes a bit overwhelming, process. There are so many decisions to make that it’s sometimes difficult to know where to begin. Should you go room by room and make every little decision, or should you start with the exterior and work your way in? Throughout the project, your builder will help you make all the necessary decisions. As you’re going through, here are three major things to prioritize and spend the most time focusing on.

Flooring

The floor plan of the home is going to take a big chunk of time, but you will need to consider flooring as well. The floors of your home do a lot of work. They can be used to make a statement, to section off particular spaces in an open floor plan, or to create an ambiance that is unique to each room. There are also a lot of small decisions that are involved in your flooring choice. You have to decide on the material of the floors (vinyl, hardwood, tile, carpet, or something else), the width of the planks if you choose wood or a wood look, the color and finish of the floor, and any accessories you’re going to use, like throw rugs.

Lighting

This may seem like a finishing touch, but the decisions you have to make about lighting are huge and they can’t wait till the last minute. The lighting can make or break not just the ambiance of a room but also its usefulness. You’ll find yourself avoiding that beautiful but dimly lit room if you can’t see well enough to do anything in there. It may be best to choose a variety of lighting types, from recessed to pendants to lamps, that coordinate and make the space functional.

Home Exterior

Sure, you spend most of your time looking at the inside of your house, but you still want the exterior to make a statement. A custom built home is your opportunity to make your home truly one of a kind, and exterior detailing is how you show that on the outside, for example, you can accent your windows with transoms or add arches to your entryway, to really kick up the curb appeal.
